Bismuth Magnetic Levitation Sculpture - Solar Eclipse Desk Decor
Full of possibility, this crystal pillar is reminiscent of the solar eclipse when the white hot radiance of the sun completely encompasses the cool majesty of a weightless moon. In anticipation of the total solar eclipse coming to my native land mass on August 21, 2017, I created this little marvel where a magnet can permanently escape the oppression of our massive planet's force without leaving the atmosphere. The phenomenon responsible is called diamagnetism, and bismuth is the most diamagnetic metal on earth. The first two photos show both sides of the sculpture with slightly different openings.
This permanent levitation requires no electricity - ever.
Use the words kinetic, gravity-defying, magnets, physics - the general vernacular of my beloved geekdom, and this is what you get. “How is it doing that?” “Is it plugged in?” That’s what you’ll hear when you invite guests to your home or office and they set their eyes on this. Get ready for the conversation to shift. It’s not magic, but it sure is magical!
Handcrafted Magnetic Levitation Sculpture
•Gift for the uber gadget geek!
•Includes one made to order sculpture with magnets
•Measures approximately 5” tall and 5/8” in diameter
•Made from bismuth metal
•Magnets for floating
Three- 5mm spheres
(Extra magnets are available for purchase.)
•2 Science Gift wrap options available - (Astronomy table/black and Illustrated Magnetic Fields/blue)
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS
1. Place the sculpture on a level surface
2. Slip the sphere magnet in the open notch
3. Twist the top magnet until the little moon floats freely
4. Watch it levitate for hours…days…years or until the next solar eclipse.
See this gravity-defying creation in action!
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SCULPTURE
The little magnet in the sculpture is touching nothing but air in this unique kinetic piece featuring diamagnetic flotation of a 3 mm-cubed magnet. This new, yet simple, technology requires no power of any kind — just a balancing of bismuth crystals and magnetism.
Bismuth happens to be the metal with the greatest amount of diamagnetism. That means it repels north and south poles of magnets equally. It's a very weak push, and we didn't know about it for a long time. The top magnet attracts the small magnet with enough force to lighten it. Just a little bit. The diamagnetic force of the bottom bismuth crystal can then push the little cube off its surface without pushing it too high into the upper magnet's attractive field. That way it achieves balance in a repulsive pocket of stability between a pair of larger attractive fields, magnetism and gravity.
**Neodymium magnets are not for children. Small magnets can pose a choking hazard. If multiple magnets are swallowed, they can attach to one another through intestine walls. This can cause a severe health risk, requiring immediate, emergency surgery if correctly diagnosed.
**Neodymium magnets can affect pacemakers.
The strong magnetic fields near a neodymium magnet can affect pacemakers, ICDs and other implanted medical devices. Many of these devices are made with a feature that deactivates it with a magnetic field. Therefore, care must be taken to avoid inadvertently deactivating such devices.

THE BEAUTY OF BISMUTH
As a scientist and craftsman, I’m fascinated with the astounding properties of bismuth and love to share that with you. Please check out my shop story to see more beautiful photos of these crystals and read how it all comes together.
Please note that due to everyone’s monitor displaying differently, the colors you see may vary. Also, each piece we make is handmade to order, so items may differ slightly from the one you see pictured.
Thank you for supporting handmade and for visiting my corner of the internet.
